This memorial website was created to remember Abel Borisovich Katz (Hevel Ben Baruch) who was born in Minsk, Belarus, FSU on May 13, 1950 and passed away on November 13, 2008. He will live forever in our memories and hearts.

Abel Borisovich Katz (Hevel Ben Baruch), 58, of Peoria, passed away at 6:36 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2008, at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Abel was born in Minsk, Belarus, FSU on May 13, 1950, son of Baruch and Tamar (Kuzinetz) Katz. He married Betya Izakova on October 19, 1974 in Minsk. She survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Inna Katz (Oscar Coronel) of Arlington Heights; son, Michael of Peoria; grandson, Isaac Katz Coronel of Arlington Heights; parents and sister, Sophia, of Haifa, Israel.

Abel was last employed in maintenance at the B’nai B’rith Covenant House in Peoria. He was formerly employed with the Ben Schwartz IGA in Peoria and, while in Minsk, he was a professional soccer player.

In 1990, Abel brought his family to the United States of America. In 1995, Betya, Inna and Abel all obtained their U.S. Citizenship.

Abel enjoyed sports, especially soccer and hockey, and listening to Jazz music. He loved his family, was a good provider and an excellent husband, father and grandfather.

He was a member of the Congregation Agudas Achim and the Chabad of Peoria. He collected kippot from all of the Jewish events that he attended and received his greatest enjoyment in life from attending minyan and calling on people to attend minyan.

Graveside services and interment were at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2008, at Peoria Hebrew Cemetery, with Rabbi Eli Langsam officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Chabad of Peoria, the Congregation Agudus Achim, the National Kidney Foundation or the Peoria Hebrew Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home in Peoria.

Dear Katz Family,
My earliest memory of you was the night you arrived in Peoria. I was amongst the welcoming contingent that evening and I have always held a warm spot for your family. You, Betsy and Abel, sacrificed to enable your children to have a better life. It has not been easy, but your children are a testament to the value of your sacrifice. I admire your strength and determination. Please know that I was very sorry to read the sad news of Abel's passing in the Journal Star.
Fondly,
Louise Kepple
